Breathe Pakistan Conference Kicks Off in Islamabad to Tackle Climate Change

Islamabad is set to host a two-day international climate conference under DawnMedia’s ‘Breathe Pakistan’ initiative, beginning today at the Jinnah Convention Centre. The event brings together national and international experts to discuss viable solutions for climate resilience and mobilizing climate finance.

The conference aims to position Pakistan as a climate-resilient nation by 2047 through collaboration with South Asian countries. Experts will address challenges such as rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, water scarcity, and frequent natural disasters.

Key Sessions and Speakers

A session on climate finance will feature Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, former SBP governors, and Valerie Hickey, Global Director for Climate Change at the World Bank. Hickey will also discuss climate mainstreaming and adaptation strategies.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal will participate in a roundtable on sustainable public-private partnerships. Meanwhile, a session on agriculture, forestry, and food systems will include FAO Representative Florence Rolle, Climate Change Ministry Secretary Aisha Humera Chaudhry, and former climate change minister Malik Amin Aslam.

The conference will conclude tomorrow (Feb 7) with an address by former Prime Minister and Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani. Other notable speakers include climate expert Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, Petroleum Minister Musadik Malik, and climate activists Karishma Ali and Zunaira Qayyum Baloch.
